Between Two Covers

What’s in between two covers?

So much more than only words! The Leadership Harbor team reads! Reading is best when it’s shared and applied.

Leaders are readers, and while you will often hear us saying that everyone is a leader, it can

be a challenge to know what to read to make the most of one’s valuable time. Time is one of our most precious resources. The most successful people we know only have 24 hours in their day, the same as all of us; therefore, finding ways to make the most of the time we have is critical to our success and ultimately our significance in impacting the lives of others. One way is to read those great books that others have read in those areas of similar interest to our own.

We wanted to offer you some of our favorite reading recommendations from 2021, and what that/those book(s) has/have done for us in our lives:

Jody Fayman - Coach FOR: Your Control of Your Financial Lifestyle

THE TOTAL MONEY MAKEOVER by Dave Ramsey is a book that I gave to my kids and to others years before I became a Certified Financial Coach through Ramsey Solutions. The common sense approach and proven track record given in the book concerning Financial Literacy are timeless. January 1 starts a new year so why not read THE TOTAL MONEY MAKEOVER and begin a new Financial Lifestyle that will change your life and the lives around you, forever.

Zac Wolfe - Coach FOR: Accessibility, Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (AJEDI)

The book that had the greatest impact on me this year and will continue to impact my life in 2022 and beyond is Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation by Parker J. Palmer. Palmer's book was recommended to me when the Spirit within me was compelling me to take my life in a different direction than I was headed and was fighting to be heard. As I wrestled with what my life had become and the Spirit’s attempts to propel me in a different direction, Parker’s spiritual wisdom liberated me to listen to and follow the compulsion of the Spirit inside of me and begin to claim and live into my true selfhood, and it will continue to for years to come. I consistently recommend this book to friends and colleagues, and I recommend it to you as well.

Kris Peterson - Coach for Entrepreneurship and Team Transformation

There are 2 books that have made an impression on me personally and professionally in the past year - as a matter of fact, I continue referring back to my notes in both of those books! The first was Change your World by John C Maxwell. I love the transformations discussed in the book - and I know the principles have been applied first hand in many countries. The results have been incredible. The second book has been, Know What You're FOR, by Jeff Henderson. This has helped me serve the community and my team better already! Knowing what Leadership Harbor is FOR, and discussing it with our team and some of our clients has been insightful as to the gaps that exist between where & what we want to be known for, and where and what we are known for. That, of course, is that we want to empower people to realize their potential with confidence and influence.

Brian Peterson - Coach for Your Personal Growth Awareness & Achievement

My favorite book of 2021 was It’s Your Ship by Captain D. Michael Abrashoff. This is a phenomenal leadership book in its own right, and also because it is a model of leading up, which is leading those above you by doing the right things because your people matter more than the tasks, and sharing vision and achieving goals together builds team unity. Leading in this manner is more significant to team and personnel development than simply following standard operating procedures which are put in place to provide safety and security. These Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), do not, by themselves, achieve the optimal outcome. Leadership Harbor is young, and I know it will be successful, but to reach significance, it will only happen by adding value to people, and the greater a developed team we have, the sooner we will reach the level of significance that leaves a legacy!

Chris Hansen - Coach to Youth & Those Who Serve Youth

One of my favorite books that I read this past year is Believe It by Jamie Kern Lima. In addition to it being a great story, it helped that I got to spend some time learning from Jamie at our conference earlier this year and hearing her at Live2Lead this Fall. In the book she said "So many of us waste so much of our lives shrinking who we are and how we show up because we're worried what other people think." That speaks so much to me. As we head into 2022 I want to take this reminder for me and also as a Coach, for those I get to serve. My challenge for each of us in the New Year would be that we stop worrying about what others think and intentionally show up to live our life, full of confidence and influence.

Happy Holidays from Leadership Harbor!!
