1 John 1:7 - But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (ESV)
I tend to wake up pretty early. To respect my wife, who likes to sleep in, I leave the lights off and head to the bathroom, where there's a nightlight to illuminate my way. Then I can shut the door, turn on the light, and get ready for the day.
One morning, I noticed that when I walked back into the bathroom after going for a walk outside—before the sun was up—the bathroom nightlight wasn’t as bright as it was before. It made me pray, "God, why do our eyes work that way? Why isn't the same light enough now?" The light hasn't changed; only my perspective has. I was exposed to the light outside, then returned to a darker room, and my eyes hadn't adjusted yet.
This got me thinking more the next day while I was walking. The overcast night left no stars or moon, and the darkness made me reflect on those nights with clear skies, shining stars, and a full moon.
When we go out into the darkness—when we isolate ourselves, as Proverbs 18:1 describes, and seek our own desires—we fight against all logic. As we walk through this darkness, however, stars can appear. These stars are like other Christians living Godly lives; they are sources of guidance or hope, providing us just enough light to help us regain our focus and see more clearly as we navigate our path.
The moon, then, is like having friends in our lives who reflect the light of Jesus. Their accountability and encouragement reflect the [Son] into our darkness until we can step fully back into the light ourselves.
Of course, if we're walking in the sunlight—we're in the [Son], the light of Jesus.Â
There will always be times when we walk in darkness, face struggles and trials, or turn away from our faith. Remember, then, other lights are available. The stars are like Christians we run into in passing —church members, Christian radio personalities, faith influencers—who shine their light out into the world, being examples to everybody. Or our close friends who come alongside us and give us encouragement. Their light can guide us back to where the [Son] is.
Scripture reminds us of this: 1 John 1:7—"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we will have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin." (ESV)
When we are with other followers, their light helps guide us back to his light, where we receive cleansing from our sin and are made right with God. If you're in a dark time, look for the light that shines from others so you can find your way back. If you are living a great life, let your light shine; you may never know who needs it to get back to Jesus.
Go be light in this dark world. Let your everyday walk with Christ lead others. That is how you live Beyond Average.
