Model: Mentors Are Available

And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” Acts 8:29 (ESV)

And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians,

who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Acts 8:27-31 (ESV)

Wouldn’t it be great if we were all coached by John Maxwell?! Unfortunately, John Maxwell is not omnipresent. So who should you choose? Well, you should select someone available. A person you have access to and can be close to. Hopefully, you will even be able to have some life experiences with them. These experiences build a bond and will help accelerate your journey.

Choose someone just a few steps ahead of you, not someone in a completely different league. While John would be great, he is so far ahead of me on the journey that I could not possibly comprehend the number of steps between where I am and where John is. It would not be valuable to his time or mine because of the amount of effort he would put into me at my stage of life. It would be like asking Patrich Mahomes to teach grade schoolers to throw 50-yard bombs. Eventually, we can level up and get those top-tier coaches. Hopefully, someday, we will be disciplining people as top-tier leaders.
