To Make Disciples, You Must - Expand

An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before the great. (ESV, Proverbs 18:15-16)

One of my favorite movies is The Hill in Man From Snowy River. At one point in the movie,

a very expensive colt runs away and joins a pack of wild horses. The colt's owner arranges for a posse to chase down the herd of horses and bring back the prized colt. During the pursuit, the herd of horses runs down a very steep hill. The posse thought that following the herd down the hill was impossible.

However, Jim, an outcast young mountain man, uses his knowledge of growing up in the mountains and follows the herd down the hill. Jim leaned into his expertise and sought out the wisdom of his mentor, Spir. This allowed for Jim’s gifts to make room for him to succeed. Ultimately, Jim single-handedly brings the herd of horses in and is respected and honored by those who witnessed his feet.

There is no way to measure potential.

Jim was constantly overlooked or looked down upon. Yet, Jim would not allow himself to be limited by what others thought or their attempts to stop him from being the best version of himself he could be.

We, too, have unlimited potential. If we acknowledge a limit, it is self-imposed. Sure, the human body or limits in technology might present barriers. But people keep setting world records, and technology helps us accomplish more and more every day. We need to put ourselves in a place where we push the limits of who we are. Discover all you can about where you are currently limited. Go and outlive that limit! Then repeat.

When we expand who we are, we grow closer to the potential God has put inside of us.

If we settle for the status quo or are content with where we are, we will limit our effectiveness to disciple others. We need to expand our capacity to lead by increasing the capacity of our potential.

To expand our capacity of potential, we can use The law of the thermostat. The law of the thermostat says what you set your standard to is where you will default when you aren't being intentional. We have a default temperature that our thermostat sets our potential to. How can you raise your potential level 1 degree? Think about where you want to be and take one step. Once that step becomes your new thermostat potential level, take another step.

Go, outlive your limits!

P.S. It would be my honor to serve as your coach. Please contact me to set up a discovery session!
