Do not be conformed

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by

the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” (ESV)

Character is a fundamental part of who we are as people. It’s how we act and behave. According to Maxwell, character means the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. What characteristics do you have? What characteristics do you show to the world? Strong character is essential when we lead our families and communities.

How do we develop high-quality character?

Deciding what kind of character you want to show those you lead is critical to the influence you will have on others. When we show a false character to the world, one that isn’t actually what we believe or what we act when not around certain groups of people, it will inevitably push people away over time. However, as we strengthen our character, we naturally attract others.

How do we build character? Romans 12:2 ultimately provides the starting point for building a strong character. By transforming and renewing our minds, so that we can have good character.

To accomplish transforming and renewing our minds, we can do the following.

First, develop a healthy, holy fear of God. As Proverbs 1:7 says, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge. We have to have a healthy fear of the Lord. We have to know what his desires are and want more than anything to please him. That establishes our character's “why.”

Next, reflect on your character by listing your strongest qualities and the traits you most appreciate. What are you proud of? Identify areas you see as weaknesses. What do you need to improve?

Then, practice gratitude by making a list of qualities in yourself that you appreciate. Take a moment to thank God for each one, acknowledging their positive impact.

Finally, select one specific aspect of your character to improve. Decide whether you will build on a strength or address a weakness. Make a plan to further develop your strong qualities—for example, by seeking opportunities to use them more often—and choose specific actions to address your weaker areas, such as setting goals or finding resources for improvement.

When we have strong character, we will have great influence. And with great influence, we can lead our families and our communities well.
