“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by
testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:2 (ESV)
Back in my high school days, I repelled down a mountain, and while everyone in my cabin did it, that experience pushed me beyond my comfort zone in a way I never expected. Stretching myself in that moment—facing fear, persevering through it, and learning from it—set me apart from the other guys there. I became their leader, not because I was the most skilled or the strongest, but because I was willing to be stretched.
The Power of Being Stretched
What truly sets us apart? It’s not the titles we hold or even the skills we develop, but our willingness to be stretched and to grow in ways that challenge us deeply. This willingness to be stretched is how we gain credibility, and it’s how we develop the capacity to lead and mentor others.
Romans 12:2 calls us to resist the urge to conform. We’re invited to transform ourselves by renewing our minds and allowing God to test and refine us. This isn’t passive work; it requires action and intention. Just like in my high school story, stretching isn’t just about going through an experience but about how we approach it with resilience, openness, and an eagerness to learn.
Are You Ready to Stand Out?
Take a moment to ask yourself: *What is setting me apart? How am I allowing God to stretch me, and how am I responding to that process?* Transformation, as Paul tells us in Romans, is an active journey. To be stretched, we have to resist what’s comfortable and push beyond what’s familiar. It’s not easy, and it can’t happen when we settle for mediocrity. Those around us—our family, friends, colleagues, and community—take notice when we rise above comfort, and our example can inspire them to stretch as well.
